The work on the constitution was completed in 6 years. And at night from 27 to 28 June 1996 adopted and put into force Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Constitution of Ukraine. The document was supported by two thirds of the deputies. It was implemented through a strong presidential power that private property was guaranteed, confirmation of the new state symbols, the status of the Ukrainian language as the only official, recognition of Crimea as an autonomous republic in Ukraine.

Now Ukraine is in the process of constitutional reform. The Constitution of 1996 provides a rigid procedure for the introduction of amendments and additions and require from 2/3 to 3/4 of the votes from the constitutional assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. If the changes nullify or impair the rights and freedoms of the citizens, or is addressed at the elimination of independence or threatening the territorial integrity, the Constitution of Ukraine, in accordance with Article 157, generally can not be changed.

Reading of the bill in the second and final reading is scheduled for 2016. For adoption is needed a constitutional majority of 300 parliamentary votes. Supporters of the bill for the moment: Opposition bloc (43 deputies in the Verkhovna Rada). Against: Self Help (Samopomich UKR., 26 deputies and deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada), Oleh Lyashkos Radical Party (20 MPs) and the All-Ukrainian Union Svoboda (6 deputies).
